After the dead animal skins are soaked in a compound of cow urine to allow the hairs to be scraped off more easily, they are then transferred to these noxious, acidic, bacterial-infested pools containing (principally) pigeon excrement where workers knead the skins with their bare feet. This is meant to soften the skins.
